2008 Green Prom: The Princess Project

Apr · 2 Comments

Can’t wait for prom? Did you know you can be uber-psyched for your special day and still make a green impact? Yep, meet The Princess Project. This video segment from Eco News gives you the scoop on the latest prom trend for 2008 – recycled dresses! Think about it, most prom dresses are worn one time, for one night, then it gets relegated to the back of the closet never to be seen again. Sure you might know a fashion forward friend who can actually redesign an old prom dress into a stylish new creation, but most of us just sigh and leave our prom dress alone with those other “never to be worn again, but I really can’t get rid of this” items like the cashmere sweater with the moth hole, that cute tank top that will never fit again and of course, skinny jeans. Why not put that prom dress to good use and donate it?

The Princess Project promotes self-confidence and individual beauty by providing free prom dresses and accessories (love that – you always need to accessorize!) to high school girls who cannot otherwise afford them. It’s a great project and you’ll feel good participating.

BTW: Eco News is your daily dose for everything Green in the San Francisco area! From the most current information on renewable energy and organic produce to environmentally friendly products and people making a difference!

Sex and the City designer Gilles Montezin

Apr · Leave a Comment

Sex and the City is one of the most anticipated movies of the year – well at least to me and my friends and thousands of other SATC fanatics. I’ve really missed those girls and I am looking forward to all of those crazy conversations, the cosmos and of course the killer clothes!

If you’re one of the fans waiting in anticipation until the Sex and the City movie, here’s a little quick fix – Jean Voute Pratt of the style observer interviews couture designer Gilles Montezin at his Upper West Side design studio. His designs are featured in the May ‘08 release of Sex and the City as well as the upcoming Confessions of a Shopaholic. Another movie on my ‘must-see’ list for sure!

Environmentally Friendly Fashion: Deborah Lindquist

Apr · 4 Comments

Deborah Lindquist is a fashion forward designer who is completely ahead of the ‘going green’ trend by designing couture-inspired, environmentally conscious fashion. With a creative eye and keen sense of style, this eco-conscious creator breathes new life into recycled cashmere, repurposed kimonos and other fine fabrics by combining them with sustainable fabrics such as cotton, wool and hemp. Pretty cool I know!

Don’t worry, these fashions aren’t those granola crunching, no makeup wearing, dead head following, tie dye styles either (and I love the dead). Nope, they are hip, edgy pieces designed for today’s style mavens looking to wear something inspired and good for the planet. Her list of A-List celebs include Gwen Stefani, Charlize Theron, Hilary Duff, Jessica Simpson and more. Talk about a following.

Deborah’s designs run the gamut from ready to wear and accessories -including a collection of doggie sweaters that are to die for!- to a green wedding gown collection that makes me want to get married all over again, just for the dress. Hey, I can try them on, can’t I?

If you’re looking for a designer making a difference, look no further; with her passion for the planet and striking silhouettes, Deborah Lindquist is IT.
